WICHITA, KAN. — In a chilling case of drug trafficking, Lynn Bernhardt, 21, from Clearwater, Kansas, was sentenced to four years in federal prison this Wednesday for her role in a methamphetamine sale ordered over the phone from Sedgwick County Jail.
Bernhardt pleaded guilty to one count of using a telephone in furtherance of drug trafficking. According to U.S. Attorney Tom Beall, on January 16, 2016, Bernhardt took a call from co-defendant Samuel Below, who was incarcerated at the Sedgwick County Jail. Below instructed her to sell a pound of methamphetamine that he had stored at her residence. She followed his orders and sold the drug.
Below faced his own sentence in December, receiving 10 years in federal prison for his involvement in the scheme.
The investigation was a collaborative effort involving the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Department, the Wichita Police Department, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorney Alan Metzger was recognized for his work on the case.
Bernhardt’s sentence serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by drug trafficking and the lengths some individuals will go to in order to profit from illegal activities.
