Daniel Christian Thomas, Methamphetamine Trafficking, Kansas 2023

WICHITA, KAN. – A Wichita man is headed to federal prison after a routine traffic stop uncovered a stolen vehicle, a loaded .45 caliber derringer, and a significant stash of methamphetamine. Daniel Christian Thomas, 32, was sentenced Monday to five years behind bars for carrying a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking, according to U.S. Attorney Tom Beall.

The case began when the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Department pulled over a PT Cruiser that had been reported stolen. It didn’t take long for deputies to discover why the driver was avoiding attention. Inside the vehicle, authorities found Thomas, along with a Bond Arms Snake Slayer derringer – a compact .45 caliber handgun – and a scattering of .410 shotgun shells. The presence of the firearm immediately raised red flags.

But the gun wasn’t the only illegal cargo. A search also revealed three baggies packed with methamphetamine, two digital scales commonly used for weighing narcotics, and a hefty $1,000 in cash. The combination of stolen vehicle, weapon, drugs, and money painted a clear picture: Thomas wasn’t just joyriding.

Thomas ultimately pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful possession of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking. In his admission, he confessed to the details of the stop and the contents found within the stolen PT Cruiser. He didn’t offer explanations, and the court wasn’t asking for them. The evidence spoke for itself.

Federal prosecutors weren’t letting this one slide. Assistant U.S. Attorney Alan Metzger successfully argued for the five-year sentence, highlighting the danger posed by individuals who combine drug dealing with firearms. The sentence sends a message: arming yourself while peddling poison will come with serious consequences.

U.S. Attorney Beall offered praise for the collaborative effort that brought Thomas to justice, specifically commending the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Department for their initial stop and thorough investigation. This case serves as a reminder of the ongoing battle against drug trafficking and the importance of interagency cooperation in keeping Kansas streets safe – or at least, a little less dangerous.
