WICHITA, KAN. – Jeremy Michael Schmidt, a repeat offender, will spend the next 16 years and 3 months behind bars after being sentenced Thursday for distributing child pornography. The 41-year-old Wichita man pleaded guilty to one count of the heinous crime, a betrayal of the most vulnerable among us.
U.S. Attorney Tom Beall announced the 195-month sentence, a consequence Schmidt earned through his continued disregard for the law and the safety of children. This isn’t Schmidt’s first brush with justice; in 2013, he was convicted in Florida on a possession of child pornography charge, forcing him to register as a sex offender under the name Jeremy Michael Davis. He attempted to evade accountability by legally changing his name, but investigators caught up to him.
The case unfolded after the Wichita Police Department received four separate CyberTipline Reports from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. These reports flagged suspicious online activity, leading investigators to uncover a trail of emails where Schmidt actively shared links to horrific child pornography. The evidence was damning, and quickly led to his arrest.
“This sentence sends a clear message: those who exploit children will be relentlessly pursued and brought to justice,” stated a source close to the investigation, speaking on condition of anonymity. “The internet provides anonymity, but it doesn’t provide immunity. We are watching, and we will find you.” The investigation highlights the crucial role of the CyberTipline in identifying and disrupting online child exploitation networks.
The successful prosecution was a collaborative effort, with significant contributions from Homeland Security Investigations and the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force. Assistant U.S. attorney Jason Hart skillfully presented the case, ensuring Schmidt faced the full weight of the law. Beall specifically commended these agencies and Hart for their dedication to protecting children and holding predators accountable.
Schmidt’s history as a registered sex offender demonstrates a pattern of predatory behavior. While 195 months is a substantial sentence, it remains to be seen if it will be enough to prevent him from re-offending upon release.
