Hakim Benjamin, 21, of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, was handed a 27-month prison term by U.S. District Judge Sara Lioi on charges of conspiracy to steal and resell vehicles.
Between December 2021 and February 2022, Benjamin and his co-conspirators targeted high-value cars such as Dodge Durango, Dodge Ram TRX, and Audi 8 from dealerships in Michigan, smuggling them to Ohio for resale. Court records reveal a meticulous scheme designed to bypass law enforcement.
Joining Benjamin in the indictment were Jaylen Harris, Lavelle Jones, and Devin Rice. Their case continues as it unfolds in the Northern District of Ohio. The ring’s criminal activities remain under investigation.
Judge Lioi also ordered Benjamin to pay a substantial $1,203,445 in restitution, which he is expected to share with his co-defendants if convicted.
The operation was cracked down upon by a multi-agency task force including the Cleveland FBI, USPIS, Ohio State Highway Patrol, and local law enforcement agencies. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Kathryn G. Andrachik and Jason W. White led the prosecution.
Benjamin’s sentence serves as a stark reminder of the lengths organized crime can go to for financial gain and the relentless effort of authorities to thwart such operations.
