Cleveland Man Indicted for Four Bank Heists
A 39-year-old Cleveland man has been indicted for four brazen bank robberies, including one attempted heist, federal authorities announced Tuesday. Eddie J. Fletcher, a native of Cleveland, faces three counts of bank robbery and one count of attempted bank robbery, according to Steven M. Dettelbach, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio.
The indictment alleges that Fletcher robbed three banks in the region: First Merit Bank in Streetsboro, Ohio, on January 10, 2013; Chase Bank in Cleveland, Ohio, on April 3, 2013; and, First Place Bank in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, on September 9, 2013. The indictment further alleges that Fletcher attempted to rob the same Chase Bank branch on November 25, 2013.
If convicted, Fletcher’s sentence will be determined by the Court after review of factors unique to this case, including his prior criminal record, if any, his role in the offense, and the characteristics of the violation. In all cases, the sentence will not exceed the statutory maximum and in most cases it will be less than the maximum.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney M. Kendra Klump following an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Streetsboro Police Department, and other local law enforcement agencies.
An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. A defendant is entitled to a fair trial in which it will be the government’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
According to the indictment, Fletcher’s alleged crimes spanned over a year, with the first robbery occurring in January 2013 and the final attempt in November 2013. The case highlights the need for increased security measures at local banks and the importance of law enforcement collaboration in bringing perpetrators to justice.
