Fort Myers, FL – A gritty federal court ruling has handed down a seven-year sentence to Jose Ignacio Carrizalez III, 27, of Clewiston, for unlawfully possessing firearms as a convicted felon. The sentence was meted out by U.S. District Judge Sheri Polster Chappell on March 12, 2025.
Court documents reveal that law enforcement executed a search warrant at Carrizalez’s residence on April 12, 2024, following his sale of a firearm to an informant and his offer to sell another one. The raid yielded multiple firearms, assorted ammunition, and a device capable of converting semi-automatic pistols into machine guns.
Carrizalez, who has prior felony convictions, is prohibited by federal law from possessing firearms or ammunition. The search warrant execution resulted in the seizure of the weapons and accessories.
This investigation was a collaborative effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Hendry County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney Patrick L. Darcey prosecuted the case.
The sentencing is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a comprehensive initiative that brings together law enforcement at all levels to combat violent crime and gun violence, ultimately enhancing community safety.
Project Safe Neighborhoods was strengthened on May 26, 2021, with a focused strategy that includes fostering trust in communities, supporting local violence prevention efforts, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring outcomes. The aggressive approach aims to reduce violent crime and make neighborhoods safer for all residents.
