Man Sentenced to 11 Years for Shooting, Methamphetamine Possession
Kansas City, MO – In a shocking turn of events, a Kansas City man has been sentenced to 11 years in federal prison without parole for shooting at another man with a firearm. Clifford E. Porter, 40, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Greg Kays on an unspecified date for being a felon in possession of a firearm and possessing methamphetamine.
On September 11, 2025, Porter pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm and possession of methamphetamine. This guilty plea came after a Kansas City Police Department detective witnessed a shooting on July 1, 2025, on Spruce Avenue in Kansas City, MO.
The detective observed a male riding a bicycle in the roadway when he was approached by Porter. The two men began arguing with a group of approximately five people. Porter then removed a firearm from his waistband and fired a single round in the direction of the male on the bicycle.
The detective immediately notified uniformed officers, who arrested Porter within seconds of the shooting. A search of Porter’s person revealed a small bag containing approximately 2.73 grams of methamphetamine. A Hi-Point, Model C9, 9mm semi-automatic pistol was also found on the sidewalk near where Porter was arrested.
Under federal law, it is illegal for anyone with a prior felony conviction to possess a firearm or ammunition. Porter has prior felony convictions for possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of a firearm, burglary in the first degree, and robbery in the second degree.
This case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jessica Jennings. The Kansas City, Missouri Police Department investigated the crime as part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative to combat violent crime and protect communities.
