Defendant’s Scheme Unravels: Clinton Greyling Pleads Guilty to Aiding Unregistered Broker

BOSTON – In a shocking turn of events, Clinton Greyling, the 49-year-old president of Trends Investments, Inc., a now-defunct investment firm, has pleaded guilty to aiding an unregistered broker in a scheme that preyed on unsuspecting retail investors.

According to court documents, Greyling’s company sold securities of fledgling public companies to investors nationwide, promising them lucrative returns. However, the scheme unraveled when it was revealed that the broker, who was no longer registered with the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission, was being paid an undisclosed commission of approximately 40 percent on sales.

The total commission paid to the broker was over $800,000 on sales totaling over $1.9 million. Greyling further assisted the broker by providing positive information about the companies, including information about when the companies’ securities would begin active trading on the over-the-counter market.

However, the promised investment returns did not materialize, and the shares sold to investors were ultimately worthless. The customers were unable to deposit or trade the shares in a timely manner, leaving them with significant financial losses.

Clinton Greyling’s guilty plea has sparked outrage among financial experts and investors, who are calling for greater regulation of the investment industry to prevent similar schemes in the future.

Greyling is scheduled to be sentenced on December 11, 2024, and faces up to 20 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of up to $5,000,000.

Acting United States Attorney Joshua S. Levy and Jodi Cohen, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Boston Division, made the announcement.

Assistant U.S. Attorney James R. Drabick of the Securities, Financial & Cyber Fraud Unit is prosecuting the case.
