Bizarre Attempt at Revenge Ends in Prison Sentence
A 21-year-old Brownsville man, Ricardo Gonzalez, has been ordered to serve 10 years in federal prison after a violent dispute over narcotics ended in gunfire and an attempted escape from custody.
According to court documents, Gonzalez and his former girlfriend, 18-year-old Violeta Torres, were initially working together to distribute approximately 22 pounds of cocaine in the Brownsville area. However, a dispute between the couple led to Torres hiring an individual to break into Gonzalez’s home, steal the cocaine, and physically restrain him.
Gonzalez attempted to retrieve the stolen cocaine the next day by force, discharging his firearm during the altercation. After law enforcement arrived on the scene, Gonzalez escaped police custody and fled into the south Texas brush, where he was apprehended shortly thereafter.
The investigation, led by the Drug Enforcement Administration with the assistance of the Brownsville Police Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety, recovered approximately 8.5 pounds of the narcotics.
U.S. District Judge Rolando Olvera handed down the sentence, ordering Gonzalez to serve 120 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release. Torres received an 87-month prison sentence followed by four years of supervised release.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason Corley prosecuted the case, with law enforcement officials crediting the cooperation between agencies for the successful conclusion of the investigation.
Gonzalez and Torres will remain in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility to be determined in the near future.
