CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A federal judge has handed down prison sentences of up to 25 years to three cocaine traffickers involved in a large-scale trafficking conspiracy in Gaston County, North Carolina.
U.S. District Judge Robert J. Conrad, Jr. sentenced the defendants as follows: Anthony Tommy Foster, 45, of Mokena, Illinois, to 25 years in prison, followed by 10 years of supervised release. Foster was convicted of conspiracy to distribute and to possess with intent to distribute cocaine and possession with intent to distribute cocaine and aiding and abetting in December 2020. The court also sentenced him as a career offender due to prior federal drug trafficking and other state convictions.
Reynaldo Padilla, 48, of Chicago, Illinois, was sentenced to 15 years in prison, followed by 10 years of supervised release. Padilla pleaded guilty to drug trafficking conspiracy and possession with intent to distribute cocaine. He also received an enhanced sentence due to a prior federal drug trafficking conviction.
Alejandro Miguel Padilla, 35, of Chicago, Illinois, was sentenced to 24 months in prison, followed by two years of supervised release. He pleaded guilty to drug trafficking conspiracy and possession with intent to distribute cocaine.
According to court records, the defendants were involved in a cocaine trafficking conspiracy operating in and around Gaston County. On June 29, 2020, Reynaldo Padilla and Alejandro Padilla met with Foster in Belmont, N.C., after arranging the purchase of 20 kilograms of cocaine. Foster handed Reynaldo Padilla a duffel bag containing $500,000 in cash, and Alejandro Padilla drove with Reynaldo Padilla to exchange the money for the drugs. The defendants intended to make future purchases of 100 to 200 kilograms of cocaine per transaction, according to trial evidence.
The three defendants have been in federal custody since June 2020 and will be transferred to the custody of the federal Bureau of Prisons upon designation of a federal facility.
Acting U.S. Attorney William T. Stetzer thanked various law enforcement agencies, including the Belmont Police Department, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, Gaston County Police Department, and others, for their investigative efforts and coordination in the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Steven R. Kaufman prosecuted the case.
The cocaine trafficking conspiracy was a significant threat to public safety in Gaston County, and the sentences handed down by Judge Conrad demonstrate the serious consequences of engaging in such activities.
