WHEELING, WEST VIRGINIA – Cocaine Trafficking Convict Sentenced to 14 Years
A 34-year-old Martins Ferry, Ohio man has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for his role in a cocaine trafficking operation that brought the deadly drug into Ohio County, West Virginia.
Shanwdale Saunders, 34, was sentenced to 168 months incarceration for conspiracy to distribute 280 grams or more of cocaine base, according to Acting United States Attorney Betsy Steinfeld Jividen.
According to court documents, Saunders admitted to conspiring with other individuals to transport cocaine across state lines from Ohio into West Virginia between April and May 2016.
The operation, which involved transporting the drug into Ohio County, was a brazen attempt to profit from the sale of a highly addictive and extremely dangerous substance.
Saunders, who pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute 280 grams or more of cocaine base in June 2017, faces a lengthy prison term and will be forced to confront the devastating consequences of his actions.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen L. Vogrin, who worked tirelessly to bring Saunders to justice.
The investigation was led by the Ohio Valley Drug and Violent Crime Task Force, a HIDTA-funded initiative, and the Martins Ferry, Ohio Police Department.
U.S. District Judge John Preston Bailey presided over the case, handing down a sentence that reflects the severity of Saunders’ crimes.
The sentencing is a stark reminder of the consequences of engaging in cocaine trafficking and the importance of community cooperation in preventing such crimes.
