Fraudster’s Web of Deceit Unravels in Lenexa Company Scam
A brazen scheme has been exposed, revealing the shocking depths of greed and deception. Coe Downing, a 48-year-old North Carolina man, has pleaded guilty to mail fraud, admitting to swindling a Lenexa company out of over $685,000.
Downing, who worked as a project manager for Wachter, Inc., orchestrated the scam while ordering electrical and wire cable from Anixter, Inc. He then sold the materials to another company, Cabling Systems Supply, Inc. (CSSI), pocketing the cash.
The scheme unfolded as Wachter paid for the materials by sending a check to Anixter in Texas. Meanwhile, Downing kept the money, leaving Wachter, Inc. to foot the bill. In the plea agreement, Downing has agreed to pay restitution of $25,000 to Wachter, Inc., and $660,323 to Wachter’s insurer, Federal Insurance Company.
Downing’s actions have left a trail of financial devastation, with Wachter, Inc. facing a substantial financial loss. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service – Office of Inspector General, investigated the case, uncovering the complex web of deceit spun by Downing.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Chris Oakley is prosecuting the case, which is set for sentencing on April 21. Downing faces a penalty of up to 20 years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000. The full scope of the damage caused by Downing’s actions remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: justice will be served.
As the investigation continues, it is a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance in business dealings. Companies must remain vigilant and take steps to prevent such schemes from unfolding in the future.
Downing’s case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of fraud. It is a wake-up call for businesses to prioritize transparency and accountability. The public deserves to know the truth, and we will continue to follow this story as it unfolds.
