A Colorado man was handed a 12-year sentence for possession of a firearm while on federal supervised release, marking a significant victory in the fight against illegal weaponry.
Erick Moreno, 44, faced the stiff penalty after being arrested following a traffic stop in Warren County, Mississippi. The court documents revealed that Moreno had previously been convicted of the same offense and was prohibited by law from owning or carrying firearms.
Moreno’s plight came to light when he was indicted on December 10, 2024, for the offense. He entered a guilty plea just over six months later, on June 10, 2025. The charges against him were brought forth by a federal grand jury.
Acting U.S. Attorney Patrick A. Lemon of the Southern District of Mississippi and ATF Special Agent in Charge Joshua Jackson headed the announcement of Moreno’s sentence. The investigation into this case was conducted by the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) and the Warren County Sheriff’s Office, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Amber Jones handling the prosecution.
This conviction is a part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative aimed at eradicating illegal immigration, dismantling cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and safeguarding communities from violent crime. The operation leverages resources from the Department of Justice’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN).
Moreno’s sentence sends a strong message about the consequences of illegal firearm possession, even for repeat offenders on supervised release.
