Carie Hallford, Wire Fraud Conspiracy, Colorado 2024

Denver – In a grim revelation from the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Colorado, Carie Hallford, 48, has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Hallford, along with her husband and codefendant Jon Hallford, faced charges over their operation of Return to Nature Funeral Home in Colorado Springs and Penrose.

The couple, accused of mishandling at least 190 bodies over four years, were found to have collected more than $130,000 from families for services never provided. Their fraudulent activities also included securing COVID-19 relief funds through the Small Business Administration (SBA) by submitting false loan applications, resulting in $882,300 being dispersed.

According to the plea agreement, Carie Hallford handled banking, invoicing, contracting with customers, and communications. Together with her husband, they prepared and falsified death certificates to misrepresent the disposition of bodies at their Penrose location. The discovery of multiple decomposing human remains in hazardous conditions led to the condemnation of the building as a toxic waste site.

Jon Hallford was sentenced in June to 240 months in federal prison and ordered to pay $1,070,413.74 in restitution. Carie Hallford’s sentencing is scheduled for December 3, 2025. The investigation was led by the FBI Denver Field Office and the United States Small Business Administration Office of Inspector General, with significant contributions from various Colorado law enforcement agencies.

The scheme highlights the grim reality of white-collar crime in the funeral industry and the misuse of COVID-19 relief funds, underscoring the need for stringent oversight to protect vulnerable populations.
