COLUMBIA, S.C. – LaClarence Lamarcus Anderson, 42, is staring down a potential life sentence after a federal jury found him guilty on twelve counts related to a brazen gun and drug trafficking operation. The conviction, handed down after two days of trial, lays bare a pattern of illegal activity despite a lengthy rap sheet that should have kept Anderson far from firearms and illicit substances.
The evidence presented in court painted a chilling picture of Anderson’s calculated scheme. Over a three-week period in 2024, he conducted four separate sales, each involving a dangerous combination of firearms and narcotics. The first deal saw Anderson unloading a pistol alongside methamphetamine and cocaine. He escalated with each transaction, moving two pistols, cocaine, and crack in the second. The third involved a pistol, a rifle, and more cocaine. By the fourth, Anderson was peddling three pistols, an AR-style rifle, methamphetamine, and cocaine – and crucially, a pistol equipped with a switch, a device that illegally converts a semi-automatic weapon into a fully automatic one.
Prosecutors successfully argued that Anderson wasn’t simply dealing drugs; he was using the gun sales to fuel his narcotics operation, creating a dangerous cycle of violence and addiction. This isn’t Anderson’s first rodeo with the law. Federal statutes explicitly prohibit him from possessing firearms due to prior convictions for assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, armed robbery, burglary, possession of a firearm by a convicted person, resisting arrest, and a previous unlawful weapons sale – a history clearly disregarded in his latest criminal enterprise.
The sentencing guidelines are severe. Anderson faces a mandatory minimum of 20 years in prison, with the potential for a life sentence, on his four convictions related to carrying a firearm during and in relation to drug trafficking. He’s also looking at a maximum of 15 years for four counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm and another 20 years for four counts of drug distribution. Beyond imprisonment, Anderson could be fined up to $1 million and subjected to five years of supervised release following his sentence.
United States District Judge Cameron McGowan Currie will determine Anderson’s fate after reviewing a sentencing report prepared by the U.S. Probation Office. This case is a key component of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a federal initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through collaboration between law enforcement and communities. The program emphasizes building trust, supporting community organizations, and strategic enforcement.
The investigation was a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Richland County Sheriff’s Department. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Elle Klein and Kathleen Stoughton skillfully prosecuted the case, bringing Anderson’s dangerous activities to light and securing the conviction. This conviction sends a clear message: those who repeatedly endanger public safety will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.
