Columbia Man Sentenced in Fentanyl Deal

A local man has been sentenced to four years in federal prison for his role in a fentanyl distribution operation. Jordan Davis Williams, 31, of Columbia, pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute and distribution of fentanyl.

According to evidence presented in court, an undercover agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) made a controlled purchase of 27.687 grams of fentanyl from Williams at a location in Columbia on December 17, 2020. The agent bought the fentanyl, a highly potent and deadly opioid, from Williams as part of an ongoing investigation into the local fentanyl trade.

Williams’s sentence of 48 months in federal prison was handed down by United States District Judge Mary Geiger Lewis. Following his release from prison, Williams will be subject to a three-year term of court-ordered supervision. It’s worth noting that there is no parole in the federal system, meaning that Williams will serve the entirety of his sentence without the possibility of early release.

The case against Williams was investigated by the ATF and the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, and was prosecuted as part of the joint federal, state, and local Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN). The PSN program is a key component of the government’s efforts to reduce violent crime, and focuses enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders while also partnering with locally based prevention and reentry programs.

Assistant United States Attorney Lauren Hummel handled the case against Williams, securing a conviction and a significant sentence for the defendant. The conviction and sentence are a victory for law enforcement and the community, and serve as a reminder of the dangers of fentanyl and the consequences of engaging in its distribution.

The fentanyl trade has had a devastating impact on communities across the country, and the conviction of Jordan Davis Williams is a step towards addressing this issue. As the Grimy Times continues to report on the complex and ever-changing landscape of crime and justice, we will be keeping a close eye on this case and its implications for the future.
