Dontrell Lamar Brown, Fentanyl Distribution, Georgia 2024

ATLANTA – In a stunning blow to the city’s drug trade, Dontrell Lamar Brown, a three-time convicted felon, stood arraigned in federal court today on charges stemming from his alleged distribution of massive amounts of “purple” fentanyl and illegal possession of numerous firearms. Brown’s girlfriend, Karleah Edwards, was also charged for her alleged role in moving the drugs out of Brown’s Midtown Atlanta condominium to evade law enforcement.

“Despite three prior drug felony convictions, Brown is accused of continuing his reign of terror by distributing deadly fentanyl and amassing a cache of weapons to protect his illegal empire,” U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg said. “Thanks to our hardworking law enforcement partners, this threat has been neutralized.”

Hertzberg detailed the charges: On June 19, 2025, Brown was arrested after fleeing a traffic stop in DeKalb County. While behind bars, he is alleged to have instructed Edwards through coded phone calls to remove drugs from his condo and hand them off. She allegedly executed this by removing over eight pounds of fentanyl from the residence, which was later recovered by the DeKalb County Police Department. On June 24th, a search warrant at Brown’s condominium yielded six firearms, $30,000 in cash, and evidence linking him to drug trafficking.

Brown has three felony convictions on his record: methamphetamine and cocaine sale in Gwinnett County Superior Court in 2015; cocaine possession in 2017; and multiple charges including theft by receiving stolen property in 2023. He and Edwards were indicted by a federal grand jury on September 9, 2025.

“The public must understand that the indictment only contains charges,” Hertzberg emphasized. “Both defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.” The investigation was led by the ATF and DeKalb County Police Department’s HIDTA, Narcotics, and Gang Units, with support from local sheriff’s offices. Assistant United States Attorney Michael Herskowitz is handling the prosecution.

This case is part of Operation Take Back America, an initiative aimed at eliminating cartels, transnational criminal organizations, and violent crime in our communities.
