Dontrell Lamar Brown, Fentanyl Distribution, Georgia 2025

Atlanta, GA – Dontrell Lamar Brown, 32, of Atlanta, is facing a mountain of federal charges after authorities seized over eight pounds of “purple” fentanyl and a cache of firearms from his Midtown condominium. Brown, a repeat offender with three prior felony convictions, allegedly continued to pump poison into the streets despite his criminal history, all while amassing cash and illegally stockpiling weapons. His girlfriend, Karleah Edwards, 26, of Scottdale, is also implicated in the scheme, accused of aiding in the concealment of the deadly drug.

U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg didn’t mince words: “Despite three prior drug felony convictions, Brown allegedly continued his criminal activities by distributing fentanyl and illegally possessing numerous weapons to protect his drugs and money.” The bust, a collaborative effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the DeKalb County Police Department, represents a significant blow to the flow of fentanyl in the Atlanta area, officials say. ATF Acting Assistant Special Agent in Charge Brian “Chris” Johnson emphasized the importance of interagency cooperation in combating drug trafficking and associated violence.

The unraveling began on June 19, 2025, when Brown fled from a traffic stop in DeKalb County. While jailed on outstanding warrants, investigators allege Brown directed Edwards, via coded jail calls, to remove the fentanyl from his condo. Using a carefully constructed ruse, Edwards allegedly accessed the property and made off with a briefcase packed with over eight pounds of the dangerous substance. DeKalb County PD later recovered the “purple” fentanyl at a Stone Mountain residence. Just days later, on June 24, 2025, a search warrant executed on Brown’s condo revealed a disturbing arsenal: six firearms scattered throughout the residence, including a rifle equipped with a large-capacity magazine. Authorities also discovered over $30,000 in cash, a wrapper containing purple residue, a kilogram press, and a money counter.

Brown’s rap sheet stretches back years, with convictions from the Gwinnett County Superior Court including sale of methamphetamine and cocaine in 2015; possession of cocaine in 2017; and a 2023 conviction for possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, possession of a firearm during commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and theft by receiving stolen property. This latest indictment, handed down by a federal grand jury on September 9, 2025, charges Brown with conspiracy and possession with the intent to distribute fentanyl, possession of firearms by a convicted felon, and possession of firearms in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. Edwards faces charges of conspiracy and possession with the intent to distribute fentanyl.

The government stresses that the indictment contains only allegations, and both Brown and Edwards are presumed innocent until proven guilty. The burden of proof rests with prosecutors to establish guilt beyond a reasonable doubt at trial. This case is part of “Operation Take Back America,” a nationwide initiative aimed at dismantling cartels, combating illegal immigration, and protecting communities from violent crime by streamlining resources from the Department’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces and Project Safe Neighborhoods.

Assistant United States Attorney Michael Herskowitz is leading the prosecution. The investigation involved the ATF, the DeKalb County Police Department’s HIDTA, Narcotics, and Gang Units, with valuable assistance from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office and the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office. This case serves as a stark reminder of the relentless flow of fentanyl and the dangers it poses to communities across the nation, and the ongoing efforts to disrupt the networks responsible for its distribution.
