New Orleans native Anthony Windell Brown, 30, was hit with a triple-whammy of charges this week after pleading guilty to federal drug conspiracy, gun possession, and money laundering. According to Acting U.S. Attorney Michael M. Simpson, Brown’s actions were part of a massive fentanyl distribution ring that terrorized the Eastern District of Louisiana.
The defendant, who faced multiple counts in an indictment, admitted to conspiring to distribute at least 400 grams of fentanyl, possession with intent to distribute the deadly substance, and money laundering proceeds from his illegal activities. Brown also admitted to using a stolen firearm in furtherance of his drug trafficking crimes.
Brown’s sentencing could be severe. For the fentanyl conspiracy charge alone, he faces up to life imprisonment, a fine of $10 million, and at least 5 years of supervised release. Additional penalties for possession with intent to distribute, possession of a firearm, and money laundering carry mandatory minimum sentences ranging from 5 to 20 years in prison, fines reaching half a million dollars, and substantial supervised release terms.
According to court documents, Brown’s illegal activities began prior to March 2022 and continued until May 29, 2024. He used his New Orleans residence on the 1900 block of Desire Street as a base for his fentanyl distribution operations. Brown also deftly laundered money from his criminal endeavors, ensuring he could continue his violent enterprise.
This case is part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) operation aimed at dismantling the highest-level criminal organizations in the United States. It’s also a Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative, designed to reduce violent crime and gun violence in our communities. Assistant U.S. Attorney Rachal Cassagne is leading the prosecution.
Investigations were conducted by Homeland Security Investigations, the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General, and the New Orleans Police Department. Now, Brown must face the music for his heinous crimes against society.
