Tampa, FL – In a landmark ruling that underscores the harsh penalties for gun violations, U.S. District Judge William F. Jung has sentenced Deanthony Flowers, 36, of Lakeland, to five years and six months in federal prison. Flowers pleaded guilty to possessing a firearm as a convicted felon earlier this year.
Court documents reveal that on July 12, 2023, Lakeland Police Department officers halted Flowers’ vehicle during a routine traffic stop. The officers discovered a Glock Model 31 .357 pistol, loaded and wedged between the seats, which they later confirmed had been reported stolen. Flowers, at the time of the offense, had an extensive criminal record, including multiple felony convictions such as burglary, grand theft, battery, attempted robbery, and armed burglary.
As a convicted felon, Flowers is legally barred from owning or possessing firearms under federal law. The sentence imposed by Judge Jung reflects the severity of the crime and the need to uphold public safety.
This investigation was a collaborative effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Lakeland Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Samantha Newman handled the prosecution, while Assistant U.S. Attorney James Muench oversaw the forfeiture process. The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in the community.
Project Safe Neighborhoods, launched by the Department of Justice on May 26, 2021, focuses on fostering trust within communities, supporting local organizations, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring results. This sentence against Deanthony Flowers is a testament to the program’s success in making neighborhoods safer for all residents.
