Jamie Thompson, Gun Purchase Fraud, Florida 2024

JACKSONVILLE, FL – It’s a gritty tale of deceit and the law’s relentless pursuit of justice. Jamie Thompson, 50, from Jacksonville, has pleaded guilty to the serious offense of making a false statement on an ATF Form 4473 when attempting to purchase a firearm.

The United States Attorney Roger B. Handberg announced that Thompson now faces up to five years in federal prison for his crime. A sentencing date remains unknown at this time.

According to the plea agreement, Thompson boldly stated on the required paperwork that he was not a convicted felon during his attempt to buy a firearm. However, as fate would have it, Thompson had previously been convicted of six felony offenses, making his statement a brazen lie.

This case was yet another success for the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), which uncovered the fraudulent transaction. Federal law categorizes making a false statement to a firearms dealer as a felony offense, and this case is no exception.

The investigation into Thompson’s illegal attempt to purchase a firearm was led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, with Assistant United States Attorney Frank Talbot handling the prosecution. This case is also part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program dedicated to reducing violent crime and gun violence across the nation.

On May 26, 2021, the Department launched an enhanced strategy for PSN, focusing on fostering trust within communities, supporting organizations that prevent violence, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring outcomes. Thompson’s conviction serves as a stark reminder of the consequences faced by those who attempt to circumvent the law when seeking firearms.
