Jacksonville, FL – In a case that exposes the dark underbelly of gun trafficking, a convicted felon has pleaded guilty to making a false statement to a federally licensed firearms dealer.
Jamie Thompson, 50, of Jacksonville, has admitted to lying on an ATF Form 4473 during the attempted purchase of a firearm from a licensed dealer. The paperwork, required by federal law, asks if the buyer is a convicted felon. Thompson answered no, when in fact, he had six previous felony convictions.
The case was uncovered through the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), which reviews daily denials for potential prosecution. Making a false statement to a firearms dealer is a felony offense, punishable by up to five years in federal prison.
Thompson’s case is another example of the FBI’s relentless pursuit of those who seek to exploit the system. ‘This is a clear case of a convicted felon attempting to arm himself, despite being prohibited from doing so,’ said a spokesperson for the FBI.
The investigation was led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), with the assistance of the FBI’s NICS division. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Frank Talbot.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by bringing together law enforcement and community organizations. By holding accountable those who break the law, PSN seeks to make neighborhoods safer for everyone.
Thompson’s sentencing date has not yet been set. When it is, he will face the consequences of his actions. For now, he remains a convicted felon, awaiting his fate.
