Convicted Felon Sentenced for Gun Crimes

BOSTON – In a move aimed at reducing gun violence, a convicted felon has been sentenced to 21 months in prison for federal firearms offenses in Massachusetts.

John Shaw, 32, of Templeton, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Timothy S. Hillman to 21 months in prison and three years of supervised release. Shaw pleaded guilty in September 2020 to one count of being a felon in possession of ammunition and one count of unlawful possession of a firearm not identified by serial number.

The charges against Shaw stem from a search at his residence on Sept. 24, 2019, where over 50 rounds of .22 Long Rifle caliber ammunition, 27 rounds of .357 Sig caliber ammunition, 10 expended brass cartridge cases, and one complete round of 30-06 ammunition were seized. An AR-15 short-barreled rifle that did not bear a serial number was also found during the search.

Shaw’s previous conviction in Winchendon District Court for breaking and entering in the night with intent to commit a felony and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon made him a prohibited person from possessing a firearm and ammunition.

Acting United States Attorney Nathaniel R. Mendell, along with other law enforcement officials, made the announcement today. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Kristen Noto and Michelle L. Dineen Jerrett of Mendell’s Worcester Branch Office prosecuted the case.

The sentencing of Shaw serves as a reminder of the consequences of violating federal firearms laws. The case was a result of a collaborative effort between various law enforcement agencies, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Massachusetts State Police, and local police departments.

The investigation and prosecution of cases like Shaw’s demonstrate the commitment of law enforcement to reducing gun violence and keeping communities safe.
