On July 26, 2026, a chaotic emergency response unfolded in Shiprock, New Mexico, when Marcus Allen Benally, 41, allegedly used a rifle to threaten his neighbor, prompting Navajo Nation Police to intervene. Benally then fired in the direction of an officer, striking and damaging a patrol vehicle. The motive behind Benally’s actions is unclear, but the consequences of his actions are severe.
Benally fled the scene on foot but was quickly apprehended by a K9. He is now charged with assault on a federal officer with a dangerous weapon and will remain in custody pending trial. If convicted, Benally faces up to 20 years in prison.
The Farmington Resident Agency of the FBI’s Albuquerque Field Office, along with the Navajo Nation Police Department and Navajo Nation Department of Criminal Investigations, investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Seth Teleky is prosecuting the case, which was announced by First Assistant U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison and Justin A. Garris, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Albuquerque Field Office.
