Cordero Harris, Heroin Distribution, Illinois 2023
By: Grimy Times
A Moline, Illinois man, Cordero Harris, 34, has been sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for his role in a heroin distribution ring that spanned across Illinois and Iowa.
According to court documents, Harris was arrested in January 2021 and has been in custody ever since. At his sentencing hearing, Chief United States District Judge Sara L. Darrow heard that Harris had sold heroin in both Iowa and Illinois, and that multiple firearms were found near heroin at his residence.
Harris’s fingerprints were found on the weapons, and he was previously convicted of multiple offenses in state court. Harris faced statutory penalties of at least 5 years and up to 20 years imprisonment for possession with intent to distribute heroin, 5 years consecutive and up to life imprisonment for possession of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking, and up to 10 years imprisonment for possession of a firearm as a felon.
The investigation into Harris’s activities was carried out by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Moline, Illinois Police Department, Bettendorf, Iowa Police Department, and the Illinois State Police. Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew Z. Weir represented the government in the prosecution.
The case against Harris is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by bringing together law enforcement and the communities they serve. The PSN program is based on four core principles: fostering trust and legitimacy in communities, supporting community-based organizations, setting focused and strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring results.
Harris’s conviction and sentencing serve as a reminder of the harsh consequences of engaging in illicit activities. As law enforcement continues to work tirelessly to combat the scourge of heroin and gun violence, cases like Harris’s will help to make our neighborhoods safer for everyone.
