RALEIGH
A former Polk Correctional Institution officer has been sentenced to 51 months in prison for extorting things of value from inmates during his tenure at the prison. Jason Dean, 30, of Henderson, was found guilty of using his position to obtain property and money from at least three inmates.
The investigation began in July 2014, when the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in Raleigh launched an investigation into contraband smuggling at Polk Correctional Institution. During his time at the prison, Dean used his position to seize a custom-made gold grill from an inmate, failed to turn it over to his superiors, and instead pawned it for $35.
Further investigation revealed that Dean provided inmates with pieces of paper containing his name, address, and phone number, which were used to facilitate monetary wire transfers. In return, Dean promised to supply the inmates with contraband cigarettes, but failed to deliver.
Dean resigned from his position at Polk in March 2015, but the damage had already been done. The investigation, led by the FBI, revealed a disturbing pattern of corruption and abuse of power by Dean.
Chief United States District Judge James C. Dever III handed down the sentence, which includes 51 months of imprisonment and three years of supervised release. Dean’s actions have left a stain on the reputation of the Polk Correctional Institution and the law enforcement community as a whole.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Dennis M. Duffy and Leslie K. Cooley. Dean’s sentence serves as a reminder that corruption will not be tolerated in our justice system, and those who abuse their power will be held accountable.
Dean’s actions have sparked outrage and concern among the public, and serve as a reminder of the importance of transparency and accountability in our institutions.
