Rapid City Man Sentenced to Over 33 Years for Conspiracy to Distribute Fentanyl
RAPID CITY, South Dakota – In a harsh verdict, U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier sentenced Cory Croyle, 37, to 33 years and four months in federal prison for his role in a large-scale fentanyl distribution conspiracy in Rapid City.
Croyle was convicted of Conspiracy to Distribute a Controlled Substance, a charge stemming from his involvement in distributing massive quantities of fentanyl and heroin in the Rapid City area between 2021 and 2023. The investigation revealed that Croyle and his associates sold large quantities of the deadly substance, resulting in at least one community member’s death.
Croyle’s role in the conspiracy was significant, and he continued to sell fentanyl despite knowing the risks and being on state parole at the time of the offense. Judge Schreier noted in her sentencing that this was one of the larger quantities of drugs she had seen in her decades on the bench.
The Unified Narcotics Enforcement Team, a local drug task force comprising law enforcement from the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, Rapid City Police Department, South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, South Dakota Highway Patrol, and the South Dakota National Guard, investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Anna Lindrooth prosecuted the case.
As part of his sentence, Croyle will also serve five years of supervised release and pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. He was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
