Man Steals Endangered Lemur from San Francisco Zoo

Cory John McGilloway, a 31-year-old man from Los Angeles, has been charged with violating the Endangered Species Act after stealing a ring-tailed lemur from the San Francisco Zoo on October 13, 2020.

According to the affidavit supporting the information’s warrant, McGilloway entered the zoo on the night of the theft and stole one of the zoo’s four ring-tailed lemurs, a 21-year-old lemur named Maki.

The stolen lemur was later spotted at a Daly City playground, where a 5-year-old boy found it unattended. Authorities were able to catch and return Maki to the zoo, where it was found to be hungry, dehydrated, and agitated.

McGilloway was arrested in San Rafael on October 15, 2020, after police responded to a shoplifting report at the Smart & Final store and found him driving a stolen sanitary dump truck. A maroon Saab was parked nearby, which matched the vehicle seen in a video-recorded by a woman who spotted the man walking the lemur on a leash.

Ring-tailed lemurs are native to Madagascar and are listed as an endangered species, making McGilloway’s actions a serious crime. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of one year in jail and a fine of up to $50,000.

McGilloway appeared in federal court on [no date specified] and was arraigned on an information charging him with violating the Endangered Species Act. He is currently in custody in Los Angeles and will appear in court again on July 22, 2021, for a status hearing.
