Counterfeiter Sentenced to 30 Months
ELKINS, WEST VIRGINIA – Anthony Francis Silvester, III, of Elkins, West Virginia, was sentenced to 30 months incarceration for making and possessing counterfeit money, announced United States Attorney Bill Powell today.
According to evidence presented in the case, Silvester admitted to passing a counterfeit bill in August 2016 at a business in Elkins, West Virginia. He pled guilty to one count of "Uttering Counterfeit Obligations and Securities" in May 2017.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah M. Wagner prosecuted the case on behalf of the government, working closely with the United States Secret Service, the West Virginia State Police, and the Elkins Police Department, which investigated the crime.
U.S. District Judge John Preston Bailey presided over the case, handing down the sentence to Silvester.
Silvester’s actions not only caused financial harm to the business he targeted, but also threatened the stability of our economy by introducing counterfeit currency into circulation.
The sentence serves as a reminder that the consequences of engaging in such activities are severe and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
