Courtney Melissa Hruska, 40, Sentenced for Bank Account Abuse in Alabama
In a stunning case of corruption, former congressional staffer Courtney Melissa Hruska, 40, has pleaded guilty to using access to a Congressperson’s bank account to pay her own credit card bills.
According to court documents, Hruska, a resident of Birmingham, Alabama, used her position of trust to siphon off thousands of dollars from the Congressperson’s account to cover her own financial obligations.
Prosecutors allege that Hruska abused her access to the bank account, making unauthorized transactions totaling $35,000 over a period of several months.
The case was investigated by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Alabama and the FBI, with assistance from the Congressional Office of Compliance.
Hruska’s guilty plea comes as a significant blow to the Congressperson’s office, which had previously denied any wrongdoing.
The case highlights the dangers of unchecked power and the importance of robust internal controls in preventing corruption.
Hruska faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 when she is sentenced in May 2024.
The Department of Justice has vowed to hold accountable those who abuse their positions of trust and to protect the public’s faith in government institutions.
