Newark, N.J. – In a move to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, the Justice Department has announced the availability of $850 million in emergency funding to support public safety agencies across the nation.
The Coronavirus Emergency Supplemental Funding program, authorized by recent stimulus legislation, offers critical assistance to eligible state, local, and tribal governments. This funding will enable them to address the challenges posed by the pandemic, including hiring personnel, paying overtime costs, and covering protective equipment and supplies.
“The COVID-19 outbreak has placed tremendous stress on our public safety professionals at all levels of government,” said U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito. “I urge the jurisdictions that are eligible for these vital resources to apply for them as soon as possible. Our goal is to get this emergency funding into the hands of the public safety providers who need it as quickly as possible.”
Office of Justice Programs Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Katharine T. Sullivan noted that this is an “unprecedented moment in our nation’s history and an especially dangerous one for our front-line law enforcement officers, corrections officials, and public safety professionals.”
Eligible agencies can apply for the funding immediately, with the solicitation remaining open for at least 60 days and extended as necessary. Funds may be used to address correctional inmates’ medical needs and defray expenses related to the distribution of resources to hard-hit areas, among other activities. Grant funds may be applied retroactively to Jan. 20, 2020, subject to federal supplanting rules.
Agencies that were eligible for the fiscal year 2019 State and Local Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program are candidates for this emergency funding. A complete list of eligible jurisdictions and their allocations can be found at https://bja.ojp.gov/program/fy20-cesf-allocations.
