BIRMINGHAM — A Calera man has been found guilty by a federal jury of being a felon in possession of a firearm, announced Acting U.S. Attorney Robert O. Posey and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Assistant Special Agent in Charge David Hyche.
VAUGHN ALEXANDER CROPPER, 28, faced a two-day trial before U.S. District Judge Virginia Emerson Hopkins, ultimately being convicted after opting to represent himself.
The evidence presented at the trial revealed that Birmingham police arrested Cropper on September 25, 2016, in Irondale following a disturbance involving a man with a gun. Body-worn camera footage captured the defendant reaching into his pocket before officers seized the pistol and arrested him. With multiple drug-trafficking felonies to his name, Cropper is now likely to be classified as an armed career criminal.
The jury’s decision means that Cropper could face a minimum sentence of 15 years and a maximum of life in prison. His sentencing hearing is set for July 25.
The ATF and Birmingham Police Department were responsible for investigating the case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Gregory R. Dimler handling the prosecution.
Cropper’s conviction is another blow to gun-related crime in Alabama, highlighting the federal government’s commitment to combating illegal firearm possession among felons.
