Kellie L. Johnson, Bank Embezzlement, Alabama 2024

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The grim tale of Kellie L. Johnson’s embezzlement scheme has reached its conclusion as the 54-year-old Cullman woman has been sentenced to five years in prison, announced U.S. Attorney Prim F. Escalona.

In a stunning display of justice, U.S. District Court Judge Liles C. Burke handed down a sentence of 60 months imprisonment followed by 60 months supervised release for Johnson, who pleaded guilty to bank embezzlement in May this year.

The scheme unfolded over a period of nearly a decade, from July 2013 to June 2023. Johnson, a long-time employee of First Community Bank, was accused of siphoning off money from the bank’s Federal Reserve account to cover her personal expenses, predominantly credit card bills. Her fraudulent activities came to light when the bank president received an unsettling call from the Federal Reserve about an overdrawn ACH account.

According to court documents, Johnson engaged in a sophisticated effort to hide her crime. She falsified transactions to reconcile the bank’s general ledger, deleted ACH transactions, and altered account statements sent to the bank’s top officials. Over the course of her decade-long thievery, Johnson executed approximately 273 fraudulent ACH transactions totaling more than $2.3 million, while also depriving the bank of $138,185.40 in interest income.

The investigation into Johnson’s deplorable actions was led by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Laura D. Hodge prosecuted the case with relentless determination.

This verdict sends a clear message: no matter how long or hard someone tries to get away with financial deceit, justice will ultimately catch up. Johnson’s sentence serves as a stern reminder of the consequences for those who undermine the trust placed in them by their employers and customers alike.
