New Orleans Man Sentenced to 9 Years in Prison for Weapons and Drug Charges

Cuong Nguyen, a resident of New Orleans, was sentenced to 93 months in prison on January 5, 2023, by U.S. District Court Judge Barry W. Ashe. Nguyen was found guilty of four charges: possession with the intent to distribute controlled substances, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and possession of an unregistered weapon.

Nguyen was a passenger in a vehicle pulled over by the New Orleans Police Department on November 30, 2021, at the intersection of Poland Avenue and North Robertson Street. A firearm and a backpack containing cocaine, methamphetamine, and marijuana were found near him. The firearm was equipped with a vertical fore grip, making it illegal to possess without registration.

Nguyen was prohibited from possessing the firearm due to his previous conviction of simple robbery and possession of a Schedule 2 Controlled Dangerous Substance. He was ordered to pay a total mandatory special assessment fee of $400.

The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence. The PSN program was strengthened in 2021 by setting focused and strategic enforcement priorities and measuring the results.

U.S. Attorney Evans praised the work of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Louisiana State Police, and the New Orleans Police Department in this matter. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Mike Trummel of the Violent Crime Unit of the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Nguyen will be placed on supervised release for a term of three years following his release from imprisonment. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of community-based organizations in preventing violence and the need for focused enforcement priorities in reducing crime.
