Cuyahoga Falls resident David Dougherty, 49, has been handed a three-year prison sentence for his brazen arsenal that included pipe bombs and an unserialized machine gun. The United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, Steven M. Dettelbach, confirmed the sentence, which followed Dougherty’s guilty plea to a litany of charges.
In January, Dougherty pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of destructive devices—a collection of five pipe bombs—and additional counts of firearm and machine gun possession, as well as manufacturing marijuana with intent to distribute. The court documents detailed his inventory of danger: five homemade devices, each a deadly mix of pipe, end caps, explosive powder, and a pyrotechnic fuse, alongside a silencer for a STEN 9mm submachine gun, and marijuana.
The man was caught on Oct. 20, 2012, with his destructive cache. His sentence comes after the thorough work of Assistant United States Attorney Kelly Galvin, who handled the case, as well as investigations by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Summit County Bomb Squad, and the Cuyahoga Falls Police Department.
“This sentence sends a clear message that those who threaten public safety with explosive devices and firearms will be held accountable,” said Dettelbach. The judge’s decision echoes the severity of Dougherty’s actions, ensuring justice for those who might have fallen victim to his arsenal.
