Cynthia Cave, 46, Pleads Guilty to Tax Fraud in South Carolina

Cynthia Cave, a 46-year-old woman from Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, has pleaded guilty to tax fraud in federal court in Charleston. The charges against Cave, which were brought by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, include three counts of Filing a False Tax Return, corresponding to tax years 2009-2011, in violation of 26 U.S.C. 7206(1).

According to the evidence presented in the case, Cave worked as the office manager for Coastal Facial Plastic Surgery in Mt. Pleasant. In this role, she received various forms of compensation that she did not report to the IRS. In 2009, she underreported her income by at least $55,000. In 2010, she underreported her income by at least $68,000. In 2011, she underreported her income by at least $100,000.

As a result of her actions, Cave owes the U.S. Treasury $105,276 in back taxes. In addition to this, she has agreed to pay her employer, Dr. Thomas Funcik, $130,457, to settle claims that she received excess compensation.

The case was investigated by agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Internal Revenue Service. Assistant United States Attorneys Matt Austin of the Charleston office and Winston Holliday of the Columbia office prosecuted the case.

Cave’s guilty plea was accepted by United States District Judge Richard M. Gergel, who will impose sentence after reviewing the presentence report prepared by the U.S. Probation Office.

The guilty plea and subsequent sentencing are a significant development in a case that highlights the importance of tax compliance. As the U.S. Attorney’s Office noted, tax evasion can have serious consequences, including fines and imprisonment.
