WASHINGTON – The grim streets of Washington, D.C., saw justice served as five ruthless gang members were sentenced to a combined 100 years-plus for the Labor Day weekend triple murder of Donetta Dyson, Keenan Braxton, and Johnny Joyner. Erwin Dubose, Kamar Queen, Damonta Thompson, William Johnson Lee, and Mussay Rezene faced the brunt of the Superior Court’s judgment on Thursday.
The trio of shooters, Dubose, Queen, and Johnson Lee, each received sentences exceeding 100 years for their roles in the chilling conspiracy. Dubose was handed a sentence of 123 years; Queen got 120 years, while Johnson Lee was sentenced to 105 years. Thompson was given 35 years for driving the shooters to the scene and assisting in their escape. Rezene and Toyia Johnson were sentenced to three and 24 months respectively for aiding and abetting the crime.
The court’s findings echoed the evidence presented by the government, which revealed that on September 4, 2021, at around 7:33 p.m., Thompson drove Dubose, Queen, and Johnson Lee to the 600 block of Longfellow Street, NW. The trio emerged from the vehicle, opened fire into a neighborhood gathering, and fled with Thompson back to the vehicle.
Toyia Johnson, renting the getaway car, attempted to frame the incident as a stolen vehicle by making false 911 calls. Dubose and Rezene later burned the vehicle in an attempt to destroy evidence. The motive behind the triple homicide was retaliation for another shooting earlier that evening.
Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department commended the relentless efforts of the investigators who brought these criminals to justice. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro, alongside Chief Smith, also recognized Assistant United States Attorneys Colleen Kukowski and Charles R. Jones for their dedication in prosecuting the case.
With these sentences, the court has delivered a stern message against gang violence and organized crime in Washington, D.C., ensuring that those who profit from bloodshed face the full measure of justice.
