HARRISBURG – In a shocking case of counterfeiting, Dale Richard Estep II, a 35-year-old man from Colonial Beach, Virginia, was sentenced to two years of probation, with four months of that time spent on home confinement, for passing counterfeit U.S. currency.

According to U.S. Attorney John C. Gurganus, Estep passed counterfeit currency at the Sheetz, Sunoco, and Rutters gas stations located along the I-81 and US 15 corridors in Adams, Cumberland, Franklin, and York Counties between May 12-14, 2019.

The brazen scheme saw Estep using fake bills at multiple locations, causing significant financial losses for the businesses involved. The exact amount of money lost is staggering: $3,300.

The breakdown of the restitution amount ordered by Judge Sylvia H. Rambo is as follows:

  • $2,650 to Sheetz, Claysburg, PA;
  • $500 to Sunoco A+, Dillsburg, PA;
  • $150 to Rutters, Dillsburg, PA;

The case was investigated by the United States Secret Service, Harrisburg Office, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Christian T. Haugsby prosecuted the case.
