TAMPA, FL – Dallas Robinson, Jr., 22, of Tampa, is headed back to federal prison for more than six years after being sentenced for illegally possessing a loaded firearm. U.S. District Judge William F. Jung handed down the six-year and six-month sentence on Tuesday, March 14, 2023, after Robinson pleaded guilty on December 14, 2022.
The case stems from a December 26, 2021 incident in the Rivergrove neighborhood. Robinson was riding as a passenger in a stolen vehicle, driven by another convicted felon, when police initiated a traffic stop near the intersection of East Sligh Avenue and Rowlett Park Drive. Both men bailed from the vehicle, leaving behind two fully loaded semi-automatic pistols.
Officers quickly secured the scene and recovered a loaded black SCCY CPX-1 9mm pistol from the driver’s seat and a loaded black Springfield XDS (HS Produkt) .45 caliber pistol from the passenger side footwell. Crucially, latent fingerprints lifted from the .45 caliber pistol matched Robinson. His wallet and Florida ID, left on the passenger seat near the gun, further cemented the connection.
What makes this case particularly egregious is Robinson’s recent criminal history. He had only been released from a 30-month federal prison sentence – stemming from a prior conviction under the National Firearms Act – a mere four months before this new offense. It appears a stint behind bars didn’t deter him from returning to a life of crime. The stolen vehicle adds another layer to the charges.
The investigation was a joint effort between the Tampa Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Assistant United States Attorney David W.A. Chee prosecuted the case, securing the conviction and lengthy sentence. The ATF confirmed the case falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a nationwide initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence.
PSN emphasizes building trust with communities, supporting local organizations focused on violence prevention, and strategic enforcement. While the program aims to improve neighborhoods, this case underscores the persistent challenge of repeat offenders and the ongoing need for effective crime prevention strategies. Robinson’s sentence sends a message, but whether it’s enough to break the cycle remains to be seen.”
