BOSTON, MA – Dane Mitchell, 32, of Boston and Revere, is facing a lengthy federal prison sentence after admitting to illegally possessing a firearm with a deliberately obliterated serial number and trafficking cocaine, all while on supervised release for a prior gun conviction. The bust, a product of a long-running investigation into a violent Boston gang, highlights the revolving door of justice for repeat offenders and the increasing role of social media in criminal investigations.
According to federal prosecutors, the ATF and DEA began building a case against Mitchell in 2021 after discovering a Snapchat account linked to him. The account featured images of Mitchell posing with firearms and, disturbingly, photos of his vehicle riddled with bullet holes – evidence of a life steeped in violence. This digital footprint proved crucial, as it demonstrated Mitchell’s continued access to weapons despite a 2018 federal conviction in Maine for unlawful transportation of firearms, which landed him 27 months behind bars and three years of supervised release.
In December 2021, authorities raided Mitchell’s Revere residence, uncovering a cache of illegal items. The search yielded a Taurus TCP Model 738 PT .380 caliber pistol with its serial number intentionally removed – a tactic commonly used to evade law enforcement – loaded with ammunition. But the gun wasn’t the only contraband found. Investigators also seized bags of cocaine, cocaine base, fentanyl, cutting agents, a digital scale, a blender used for processing drugs, and a press for packaging narcotics, painting a clear picture of a full-scale drug operation.
Mitchell has now pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, as well as possession with intent to distribute cocaine. He’s looking at up to 10 years in prison for the gun charge, three years of supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000. The drug charge carries an even steeper penalty: up to 20 years in prison, at least three years of supervised release, and a fine of up to $1 million. U.S. District Court Chief Judge F. Dennis Saylor IV has scheduled sentencing for January 9, 2024.
This case was conducted as part of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) Strike Force Initiative, a multi-agency effort aimed at dismantling major drug trafficking organizations. The operation involved the ATF, DEA, and local police departments in Boston, Quincy, and Lynn, showcasing the collaborative nature of federal law enforcement. Acting United States Attorney Joshua S. Levy, James M. Ferguson (ATF Special Agent in Charge), and Brian D. Boyle (DEA Special Agent in Charge) jointly announced the guilty plea.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher Pohl of the Narcotics & Money Laundering Unit is prosecuting the case.
