Defendant Receives Life Sentence for Role in International Child Exploitation Enterprise
A federal judge has sentenced Daniel Castleman to life in prison for his role in a global child pornography trafficking enterprise. The 2009 conviction was one of six charges brought against Castleman and five other defendants for their involvement in the highly-sophisticated international network.
According to evidence presented at trial, the defendants utilized Internet newsgroups, large file-sharing networks, to traffic in illegal images and videos depicting prepubescent children. The group, which operated for two years, traded more than 400,000 images and 1,000 videos of child sexual abuse before it was dismantled by law enforcement.
Six U.S. defendants were convicted for their participation in the child exploitation enterprise. Daniel Castleman, Gary Lakey, Marvin Lambert, Neville McGarity, Stepan Bondarenko, and Ronald White were all sentenced in the Northern District of Florida. Five additional defendants were sentenced on March 10, 2009.
Daniel Castleman, a registered sex offender, was found guilty following a six-day trial on six counts relating to his criminal activities as a member of the child exploitation enterprise. The charges included engaging in a child exploitation enterprise, conspiracy to advertise, transport, ship, receive, and possess child pornography, advertising child pornography, transporting child pornography, receiving child pornography, and obstruction of justice.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. The project was launched in May 2006 by the U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section.
The investigation and prosecution of this case were a collaborative effort between law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Florida. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their crimes and protecting the vulnerable members of our society.
