Former Rockville Police Officer Sentenced to 42 Months in Federal Prison for Child Pornography
A former Rockville police officer and Army National Guardsman has been sentenced to 42 months in federal prison for possessing over 12,000 depictions of child pornography.
U.S. District Judge Stephanie A. Gallagher handed down the sentence to Daniel Morozewicz, 38, of Frederick, Maryland, on , after he pleaded guilty to the charges. In addition to the prison time, Morozewicz must also pay $14,000 in restitution.
According to the authorities, Morozewicz received, possessed, and distributed child pornography on the BitTorrent file sharing network while he was employed as a Rockville police officer and an Army National Guardsman from September 2020 to January 2021. He used multiple electronic devices to download and distribute child pornography involving prepubescent minors.
During the investigation, law enforcement executed a series of search and seizure warrants on Morozewicz’s residence, vehicle, and his person. A forensic examination of his devices revealed that he possessed over 12,300 depictions of child pornography and erotica, including over 200 depicting the sexual abuse of infants and toddlers, and over 90 child pornographic images involving sado-masochistic conduct.
The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. The U.S. Attorney’s Office commended HSI, the Frederick County State’s Attorney’s Office, and the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office for their work in the investigation.
Morozewicz’s actions were viewed as an attempt to impede the investigation and prosecution of his child pornography offenses. He received a tip that federal law enforcement wished to conduct an in-person interview with him, and the next day, law enforcement executed the search and seizure warrants on his residence, vehicle, and his person.
The Maryland U.S. Attorney’s Office has launched Project Safe Childhood to help the community. For more information on the project, visit www.justice.gov/usao-md/project-safe-childhood.
