Chicago Man Sentenced to 70 Months for Cocaine Sales and Gun Possession
Hammond, Indiana – In a major blow to the city’s narcotics trade, Daniel Oliva, 30, of Chicago, Illinois, was sentenced to 70 months in prison for distributing cocaine and possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.
Oliva’s sentencing came after he pleaded guilty to the charges, which were brought against him by U.S. Attorney Thomas L. Kirsch II. The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Thomas McGrath.
According to court documents, law enforcement conducted a total of four controlled buys of cocaine with Oliva from September of 2016 to February of 2017. On February 13, 2017, law enforcement arrested Oliva after he attempted to sell four ounces of cocaine from within his vehicle. A search of the vehicle revealed he also possessed a semiautomatic pistol during the attempted drug sale.
The investigation into Oliva’s activities revealed a pattern of narcotics trafficking that posed a significant threat to public safety. His arrest and subsequent sentencing are a testament to the determination of law enforcement to combat this type of crime.
Oliva’s sentence includes 70 months imprisonment and 3 years of supervised release upon completion of his prison term. This case serves as a reminder that those who engage in narcotics trafficking will be held accountable for their actions.
