Daniel Pearl Murder Suspect Walks Free
Washington, D.C. – The Pakistani Supreme Court’s recent decision to affirm the acquittal of individuals convicted of the kidnapping and murder of American journalist Daniel Pearl has left the US government reeling.
Acting Attorney General Monty Wilkinson released a statement expressing deep concern over the ruling, which would allow Ahmad Omar Saeed Sheikh to evade justice for his role in Pearl’s abduction and murder.
Pearl, a Wall Street Journal reporter, was kidnapped in 2002 while researching a story on Islamic extremism in Karachi, Pakistan. He was later beheaded, and his murder sent shockwaves around the world.
Sheikh, who has long been indicted in the US, must be held accountable for his crimes, Wilkinson emphasized. The US stands ready to take custody of Sheikh to stand trial on pending charges, he added.
The Pakistani government’s opposition to the acquittals on appeal has been a positive step, but the Supreme Court’s decision has left many feeling frustrated and betrayed.
The case has significant implications for terrorism victims and their families, who demand justice and accountability for those responsible.
The US government will continue to pursue justice for Daniel Pearl and his family, and will not let his killer evade accountability.
