HEROIN DEALER STRIKES AT WVU
A Fairmont man has pleaded guilty to his role in a Detroit to Morgantown heroin trafficking scheme that had West Virginia University students as unwitting customers.
Daniel Ross Sims, 27, admitted to selling heroin in late 2014 near the WVU campus in Monongalia County, West Virginia. He was charged along with 13 others in February 2016, when a series of three federal indictments brought the operation to its knees.
Sims, 27, of Fairmont, West Virginia, pleaded guilty today in federal court to "Distribution of Heroin within 1,000 feet of a Protected Location." He faces between one and 40 years in prison and a fine of up to $2,000,000.
Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed will be based upon the seriousness of the offenses and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Zelda Wesley prosecuted the case on behalf of the government. The Mon Metro Drug and Violent Crime Task Force investigated.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael Aloi presided over the hearing.
The heroin trafficking scheme was a major concern for the community, with Sims’ guilty plea being a significant blow to the operation. The case serves as a reminder of the dangers of heroin and the importance of addressing the issue.
The investigation and prosecution of Sims and the other defendants are a testament to the dedication of law enforcement agencies to keeping our communities safe.
