A notorious Laredo drug dealer has been brought to justice after pleading guilty to possessing with the intent to distribute fentanyl. Jose Pedro Garcia, 39, was sentenced to 286 months in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release, by U.S. District Judge Marina Garcia Marmolejo.
Garcia’s downfall began on May 26, when authorities executed a search warrant at his residence. The search uncovered multiple small plastic baggies containing various types of suspected narcotics, including heroin, meth, cocaine base, and fentanyl. Upon investigation, authorities identified the substances and weighed them, ultimately leading to Garcia’s arrest.
During the investigation, Garcia admitted to selling drugs for approximately 10 years, starting with crack cocaine and eventually moving on to ‘China White,’ a slang term for fentanyl, a Schedule II-controlled substance. Garcia also revealed that he color-coded the bags to differentiate between the various drugs.
The case was prosecuted as part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) investigation, led by the U.S. Attorney’s Office. The OCDETF is a multi-agency task force dedicated to identifying, disrupting, and dismantling high-level criminal organizations threatening the United States.
The investigation into Garcia’s activities was conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration, Homeland Security Investigations, Customs and Border Protection, Border Patrol, and the Laredo Police Department Narcotics Division. Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian Bajew prosecuted the case.
The dangers of fentanyl are well-documented, with the DEA warning about the risks associated with the substance. The #OnePillCanKill campaign aims to raise awareness about the devastating effects of fentanyl and other opioids.
Garcia’s sentence serves as a reminder of the severe consequences of engaging in fentanyl trafficking. The Grimy Times will continue to provide updates on this case and other stories related to the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in the United States.
