Danville Man Convicted of Possession of Firearm by Felon
A federal jury delivered a guilty verdict against Alvin Beasley, 36, of Danville, Ill., for possession of a firearm by a felon. The conviction was handed down on September 22, 2021.
Beasley, who remains in the custody of the United States Marshals Service, faces statutory penalties of fifteen years to life imprisonment at his upcoming sentencing on January 24, 2022, at 1:30 p.m. at the federal courthouse in Urbana.
The evidence presented during a two-day trial showed that Beasley had possessed a firearm on May 23, 2019. Danville police responded to a shots fired call in the 1000 block of May Street, where a residence had been shot at multiple times. A witness reported seeing a car with a distinctive hood flee the scene, and responding officers stopped the vehicle after spotting a gun thrown out of its window.
Beasley and a passenger were found inside the car. The United States Attorney’s Office proved to the jury that Beasley had a romantic connection with the occupant of the residence in question. Beasley testified in his own defense, admitting to shooting up the residence but claiming that he used a different firearm than the one recovered by police.
Acting United States Attorney Douglas J. Quivey expressed satisfaction with the conviction, stating that the U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to prosecute individuals who endanger their communities by illegally possessing and using firearms. Quivey noted that a small portion of the population causes the majority of the violence and that targeted prosecutions are an essential part of addressing this issue.
The case was investigated by the Danville Police Department, the Vermilion County Sheriff’s Office, the Vermilion County Metropolitan Enforcement Group, and the Illinois State Police. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Bryan Freres and William Lynch represented the government at trial, with support from the Vermilion County State’s Attorney’s Office.
