NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – In a disturbing display of reckless disregard for human life, Daquan Montreal Lane, 29, of Newport News, was sentenced to six years and six months in prison for federal drug and firearms offenses.
Lane was arrested on September 9, 2022, after two Newport News Police Department officers conducted a traffic stop on his vehicle. The officers observed a seven-year-old child in the back seat without proper restraints and spotted a suspicious ‘corner bag’ of narcotics protruding from Lane’s hoodie pocket. As the officers began to investigate, they seized a loaded 9mm semiautomatic handgun from the driver’s door and found additional bags of narcotics.
Lane’s vehicle was subsequently searched, revealing 8.37 grams of a heroin and fentanyl mixture, 4.69 grams of another heroin and fentanyl mixture, 8.19 grams of methamphetamine, 4.71 grams of cocaine, and 140 grams of marijuana in 12 separate bags. The officers also found a flip phone, two digital scales containing narcotics residue, and a cell phone.
Lane’s record of prior crime stretched back to 2013, when he was convicted of shooting at an occupied building, attempted malicious wounding, and two counts of use/display a firearm during commission of a felony. As a convicted felon, Lane was prohibited from possessing a firearm or ammunition at the time of the traffic stop.
Lane pleaded guilty on October 30, 2023, to possession with intent to distribute heroin and fentanyl, possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, possession with intent to distribute cocaine, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, and being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.
U.S. District Judge Elizabeth W. Hanes presided over the sentencing, with Jessica D. Aber, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, and other officials in attendance. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Peter Osyf and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Alyssa Levey-Weinstein.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through community-based initiatives and focused law enforcement efforts.
