Arthur Darby, Jr. Sentenced to 10 Years for Postal Office Shooting,…

Montgomery’s Main Post Office turned into a scene of terror when Arthur Darby, Jr., 31, opened fire while employed with the U.S. Postal Service last year. The former mail handler was sentenced to 10 years and one day in federal prison by Senior United States District Judge W. Harold Albritton.

According to court documents, on December 1, 2011, Darby entered the post office located at 6701 Winton Blount Blvd. and aimed his weapon at two postal employees. Miraculously, no one was hit during the shooting. Law enforcement arrived swiftly to apprehend Darby.

U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Alabama, George L. Beck, Jr., emphasized the necessity of workplace safety, stating that his office would continue to prosecute those who threaten postal workers and patrons without hesitation.

Postal Inspection Service Inspector in Charge Robert Wemyss commended the quick response by the Montgomery Police Department and U.S. Postal Inspectors, which averted further tragedy. “This sentencing sends a clear message that violence against the U.S. Postal Service will be met with severe consequences,” Wemyss said.

The investigation was conducted by the United States Postal Inspection Service, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, and the Montgomery Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Susan R. Redmond handled the prosecution.
