Armed Bank Robbery Rocks South Bend Community
A South Bend man has pleaded guilty to committing a pair of high-profile armed bank robberies in the city. Darius Witherspoon, 20, of South Bend, Indiana, was found guilty before Magistrate Judge Christopher Nuechterlein to the felony offenses of the armed bank robbery of Key Bank and G.W Jones Bank and carrying and brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence.
According to court documents, Witherspoon, who is currently facing sentencing in February, committed the robberies after a thorough investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant United States Attorney Donald Schmid is leading the prosecution of the case, which is set to go to trial on February 27, 2014.
The guilty plea comes as a relief to the South Bend community, which had been shaken by a string of brazen armed robberies in recent months. Witherspoon’s conviction serves as a reminder that law enforcement is committed to keeping the streets of South Bend safe.
Witherspoon faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for February 27, 2014, before a federal district court judge. The case is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the United States Attorney’s Office.
As the investigation continues, residents of South Bend are breathing a sigh of relief. The guilty plea brings closure to the families of those affected by Witherspoon’s actions, and serves as a reminder that justice will be served.
In related news, another South Bend man, Quintien Sinclair Walker, 22, has also pleaded guilty to making false statements during the acquisition of a firearm. Walker’s sentencing hearing is set for March 5, 2014.
